Week 41: Distract yourself

We all have that niggling worry or problem that never ceases to keep us awake at night or have an impact on our self-esteem. For various reasons, things that get to us, also get us down and don’t help with that all important self-confidence.

I may have been a bit quiet on the blogging front lately but I have been working away on my self-esteem, just failing Internet connection means you get a bulk upload of four at once!

So week 41, what did I get up to? This week was all about distractions – taking my attention away from the source of any worries and focussing on more exciting things. An evening meeting, dinner with a friend, two days on a conference, orchestral concert, long walk and a pub quiz later and I say “What worries?!”

Keeping busy is key in all this and finding the right distractions. Something different, refreshing and surrounded by new people all help. Of course it’s not always as simple as filling up your diary for a week to eliminate the problem but it does build up the attitude of turning your head in another direction when all you can see ahead is a problem.

It also puts things in perspective, when you’re feeling low or faced with an all-consuming situation, you can see things for what they are and, usually, you realise it’s not as bad as it seems. That’s what I’ve found anyway and it’s a good way to lift you from any dip.

It’s an attitude which can also be used to help friends too. Help them put things in perspective. Remember it’s always easier to see things from the outside, that’s why we can give advice but don’t take it ourselves. Time to change.
